Windharvesting Plan 1

Title
Wind Harvesting - Lesson 1 of 6

Overview
This is the first in a cluster of six lessons on the use of wind as a power source. In this lesson students will investigate current research on the use of wind as a power source. Students will also gain an understanding of the value of pure research.

Topics Covered
Wind Harvesting, Scientific Research

KLA
Science
Subject
Design & Technology

Year
9
Stage/Level
5

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
  • apply research methodology to gather current information on the use of wind as a form of energy;
  • synthesise information on wind harvesting into a written format;
  • discuss the value of pure research.

Duration
50 minutes

Teacher Prep Time
15 minutes

Materials Required
  • computers with Internet access
  • access to library (scientific references, journals, etc)
  • worksheet (Attachment 1)
  • print outs of current research on wind harvesting to be sourced by the teacher from the CSIRO website

Procedure
  1. Teacher introduces the topic of wind harvesting:
    • show a video on alternative forms of power (optional);
    • windmills traditionally used in the Netherlands - why are they used?
  2. Class investigates current research on wind harvesting as an alternative source of power:
    • teacher distributes worksheet (Attachment 1);
    • visit CSIRO web site - http://www.csiro.au - and/or use scientific journals, etc.
  3. Teacher leads class discussion on the value of research:
    • How does it contribute to the general body of knowledge on alternative sources of power?
    • How might this research lead to commercial development?
    • Why is this sort of research (ie. pure research vs commercial research) important?
