This is the first in a cluster of two lessons dealing with the environmental threats to coral reef systems. In this lesson students will consider the human threats to coral reefs and present their ideas in a play.

Procedure
Teacher introduces the topic of the coral reefs, providing some examples and a brief description of the environment.
Class brainstorming session - teacher to make notes on the blackboard:
How do people make use of the coral reefs?
tourism
sailing
swimming
fishing etc
How is the coral reef environment affected by human activity?
Class divided into groups of 4-5.
Students create an original play script (3-5 minutes) illustrating one human affect on the coral reef:
What is the threat?
How is damage caused?

Teacher introduces the concept of copyright:
Students have created an original play which is covered by copyright protection.

Teacher introduces the definition of a patent:

Groups act out their play for the class.
Teacher leads class discussion following each presentation:
