Procedure
  1. Teacher to review discussion on coral reefs from the previous lesson (Coral Reefs - Lesson 1).
  2. Class discussion on the non-human threats to the coral reefs:
    • What did you learn in your research (homework assignment).
    • What are the physical threats to this environment?
    • What other natural threats are there?
  3. Students to gather in groups (as organised for Coral Reefs - Lesson 1).
  4. Teacher informs class that their group is to assume the role of an environmental organisation. Their charter is to conduct an advertising campaign for the protection of the coral reefs against physical threats. The task at hand is to design a poster:
    • What elements will you include in your poster?
    • What is the environmental threat you will focus on?
    • What is your solution?
    • How will you convey this message?
    • How will people who see your poster know who you are?
    • Include a logo to identify your organisation.
  5. Teacher leads discussion on the use of a logo as a trade mark.
    • Can you think of other environmental organisations that have a recognisable logo? - Greenpeace - WWF etc
    • Why do they use these symbols?
    • Definition: A trade mark can be a letter, number, word, phrase, sound, smell, shape, colour, logo, picture, aspect of packaging or any combination of these, which is used to distinguish goods and services of one trader from those of another.
  6. Each group presents their poster to the class and briefly explains their message.
