| | | | This lesson will introduce students to the use of a famous artwork for inspiration. - demonstrate a basic understanding of copyright.

| | | - Teacher states that they are holding a painting that shows a room in a house, but you’re not going to show it to them yet.
- Students ask questions about the painting that can be answered with either a yes or a no, eg:
- Does the painting show a sink?
- Is there a television in the painting?
- Is it a kitchen?
- Once students have discovered it is a bedroom divide the class into 2 teams. Call the teams the O’s and the X’s.
- One member from each team is chosen alternatively to make a suggestion as to what might be in the bedroom. If they guess correctly, they place either an O or a X on the noughts and crosses game board. The first team to get 3 in a row is the winner.
- Teacher shows the painting The Bedroom by Vincent Van Gough.
- Students make suggestions as to the name of the painting.
- Teacher asks students to describe how it is similar and different to their own bedroom.
- Teacher explains that copyright prevents us from copying the painting and saying that we painted it but it does not stop us from using Van Gogh’s idea and creating a picture of our own bedrooms.
- Class discusses the idea behind the artwork (painting a bedroom):
- Definition: Copyright protects the original expression of ideas, not the ideas themselves. It is free and automatically safeguards your original works of art, literature, music, films, broadcasts and computer programs from copying and certain other uses.
- Students create an artwork showing their own bedroom using their chosen media: ?
- paint
- water colours
- oil pastels
- pencils etc
| |
| | | |
| | | - Use other paintings as inspiration for similar art works.
| |
| | | - Did the students include objects usually found in the bedroom in their artwork?
- Was students' knowledge of copyright developed?
