Overview
This is the fourth in a series of six lessons in which students focus on writing a children’s book. In this lesson the class will review the publishing process and write a business letter to a publishing company requesting them to publish their children’s book manuscript. Students will also discuss copyright issues.

Procedure
Teacher presents the class with the following task:
You have just completed writing your first children’s book.
Now you must decide on a publisher.
Find the name of a publishing company in the Yellow Pages or on the Internet. (A list of publishers could be compiled by the teacher before the lesson if time is limited.)
Class reviews the Business Letter Model (Attachment 1) and Business Letter Scaffold (to be sourced by teacher from core English texts).
Students write a business letter requesting the publishing company, to read their manuscript and publish their book:
The letter is to be completed as a polished piece of writing for homework and ready for marking the next lesson.
Class discussion on issues that will need to be discussed with the publishing company:
contracts;
copyright (writer/ illustrator);
royalties.
Teacher directs class activity:
Create a mind map outlining the process involved in publishing a book and the issues you would need to include in each stage of the publishing process and your contract with to publisher.
Students transcribe the mind map to their workbooks for future reference.
