Overview
This is the first in a series of two lessons in which students will investigate the historic Myall Creek Massacre. In this lesson students will investigate the massacre of the natives at Myall Creek Station through research and discussion.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
  • recognise the different perspectives of individuals, groups, events and issues, with some guidance;
  • identify the meaning, purpose and context of simple historical sources in order to draw basic conclusions about their usefulness for the purposes of a specific historical inquiry;
  • use knowledge and understanding to retell, describe, explain, argue, challenge and discuss clearly and coherently.

10 - 15 minutes
 
Materials Required
  • library or appropriate history texts
  • worksheet (Attachment 1)
 
Procedure
  1. In library (or using available history text in bookroom), students complete Myall Creek Worksheet (Attachment 1).
  2. Class discussion on research project: ? What was the most reliable source of information? ? What other interesting facts did you discover?
  3. Class is divided into groups.
  4. Groups discuss their interpretation of the events pertaining to the Myall Creek Massacre.
  5. Students prepare notes in preparation for next lesson.
