Overview
This is the first in a series of two lessons focusing on the Australian Aboriginal flag. In this lesson students will research the development and design of the Australian Aboriginal flag.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
  • demonstrate an understanding of the changing nature of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal relations in Australian history;
  • recount some major events in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal relations;
  • recount key events in and developments in Australian political history in relation to the Aboriginal flag;
  • demonstrate a basic understanding of design.

Materials Required
  • computers with Internet access
  • paper
  • textas
  • worksheet (Attachment 1)
 
Procedure
  1. Teacher introduces class to the Australian Aboriginal flag.
  2. Class discussion on the elements of the flag.
  3. Teacher distributes Australian Aboriginal Flag Worksheet (Attachment 1).
  4. Students are given the opportunity to conduct research (either by using the library, available Internet resources, or distributed material):
    • Look at the image of the flag and read the history of its creation

    • Consider the recent significance of the flag from the perspective of its designer, Mr Harold Thomas.
  5. Students complete the Australian Aboriginal Flag Worksheet as a homework assignment, ready to be submitted for the next lesson.
  6. Class participates in a debate given the following resolution:
    • That Aboriginal ports people should only carry the recognised Australian flag.
  7. Students may require clarification from teacher on issues of intellectual property discussed in research:
    • Definition: Intellectual property (IP) represents the property of your mind or intellect. Types of intellectual property include patents, trade marks, designs, confidential information/trade secrets, copyright, circuit layout rights, plant breeder's rights etc.
    • Definition: Copyright protects the original expression of ideas, not the ideas themselves. It is free and automatically safeguards your original works of art, literature, music, films, broadcasts and computer programs from copying and certain other uses

Follow up Activities
  • Write a letter to Cathy Freeman outlining your views of her flag carrying.
  • Write a letter to politicians outlining your reasons for flying both flags on government buildings.
